What Is a Mock Driving Test — And Why Every Ontario Driver Should Consider One
Many Ontario students feel ready for their G2 or G road test — until the examiner sits beside them and the pressure hits. A mock driving test fixes that gap.
What Is a Mock Driving Test?
A mock driving test is a full simulation of the official MTO road test. Your instructor evaluates you under realistic conditions using the same routes, criteria, and scoring as the examiner.
It is not another lesson. It is a scored rehearsal with honest feedback.
Why Most Students Fail
Common failures are rarely about basic vehicle control. They stem from:
- Insufficient mirror and shoulder checks
- Incomplete stops
- Late or missing signals
- Hesitation or poor judgment at four-way stops
- Weak parking execution under pressure
- Poor highway merging and lane changes (especially for G)
Not every student needs a dedicated mock test. If you drive confidently without cues, handle intersections and parking calmly, and have practised near your test centre, you may be ready. Most anxious or inconsistent students are not.
What Happens in a Mock Test at Young Star
1. Pre-Drive Check
Vehicle controls, mirrors, and safety items — exactly as the examiner requires.
2. City & Residential Driving
Intersections, school zones, pedestrians, and observation habits.
3. Manoeuvres
Parallel parking, three-point turns, reverse parking.
4. Highway (G Test)
Merging, lane changes at speed, following distance.
5. Detailed Debrief
Pass/fail on each item with a precise correction plan.
G2 vs G Mock Test
| Test Type | Primary Focus | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| G2 Mock | City driving, intersections, parking, observation | G1 holders |
| G Mock | All G2 skills + highway driving and advanced judgment | G2 holders |
7 Signs You Are Probably Not Ready
- You still rely on verbal reminders for mirror checks
- You hesitate or feel nervous at four-way stops
- You forget shoulder checks before lane changes
- You have not practised parking recently
- Highway merging feels rushed or uncomfortable
- You become anxious when being evaluated
- You have never driven the roads near your DriveTest centre
If three or more apply, book a mock test. This is information, not criticism.
The Real Cost of Failing
G2 retest: ~$53.75. G retest: ~$91.25. Plus lost time, extra lessons, and delayed insurance benefits. A mock test is cheaper prevention.
If the answer is no, a mock test is worth doing before the real one.
Better to discover weaknesses in practice than on test day.
